Volunteering opportunities for Refugees and Asylum Seekers

New beginnings

front coverNew Beginnings is a 30 minute documentary about the experiences of three people who came to the UK to claim asylum and now volunteer in Sheffield. The volunteers and their volunteer managers tell about their experiences, the barriers they have faced and the benefits that have come to both the volunteers and the organisations.

 

 

 

 

 

This shows a positive perspective of asylum seekers and refugees living in the UK and could be useful for:

  • Organisations thinking of involving refugee volunteers
  • Refugees and asylum seekers thinking about volunteering
  • Promoting a positive image of asylum seekers and refugees
  • James, a Volunteer Centre advisor, started a paid job as a result of the skills and confidence he developed whilst volunteering. He encourages others to follow in his footsteps.
  • Sara, a Newsletter Volunteer for Refugee Housing Association, wants to be a doctor and volunteers to help her achieve her goal.
  • Hassan, an experienced civil engineer volunteers at a Credit Union and has helped them develop appropriate services for the Muslim community.
