Good Practice in Volunteering
We produce Good Practice Guidelines on a variety of subjects on working with volunteers - like Managing Volunteers, Paying Expenses and Writing a Volunteer Policy.
We also offer support to groups working with volunteers and deliver an ongoing programme of accredited training on Good Practice in Managing Volunteers - see Support for organisations and Training for details of courses.
Refugee & Asylum Seeker Project
The Refugee & Asylum Seeker Project provides support to assist refugees & asylum seekers to get into worthwhile volunteering opportunities.
It also gives advice to organisations and agencies who work with refugee & asylum seeker volunteers and has produced translated materials in eight languages, including good practice guidelines and proforma letters.

Types of voluntary work available
Each month, there are over 300 different volunteering opportunities working with a huge range of organisations. We can search these for a wide range of volunteering opportunities - for example working with elderly people, or gay & lesbian groups, or organisations working to combat homelessness or domestic violence. There are many more categories and we will try to find something that suits you. The Sheffield Volunteer Centre Bulletin has details of some current vacancies in Sheffield.Here are some of the things you could do as a volunteer:
- drive someone to a hospital appointment
- help out with office administration
- design some publicity
- visit an elderly person in their home
- join a management committee
- befriend mothers with young children
- give benefits advice to claimants
- repair dry stone walls
- teach people English
- raise funds for a group
- go on day trips with people who have learning disabilities
