We train more than 1,500 individuals from over 500 organisations each year. Our courses cover a wide range of topics from management and finance to mental health and personal development - and are delivered by experienced and knowledgeable trainers. Almost all our training events take place at The Circle, our modern and vibrant venue, in Sheffield city centre. VAS is keen to make sure that its training is of high quality, affordable and meets the needs of voluntary and community organisations. For more information about training, or if you have ideas for courses, or any other feedback, please contact the Training Team on 0114 253 6623 or email training@vas.org.uk. If you have any other comments or complaints, please contact John Farmer, External Services Manager on 0114 253 6628 or email j.farmer@vas.org.uk. Equality and Diversity VAS is committed to promoting diversity and equality of opportunity, and recognises that no employees, volunteers, members or service-users should experience discrimination. In particular, VAS's training programme should be delivered in a spirit of anti-discriminatory practice, where learners and trainers respect and value individual differences. If you feel that these principles have been endangered or violated, please tell the VAS Training Team. Copies of our policies are available on request. Making a Booking The easiest way for you to make a booking is via our website, www.vas.org.uk or, alternatively, photocopy and complete the booking form at the back of this document and fax or post it to us. We cannot accept telephone bookings or reservations. We prefer to use email to confirm your booking so, if you have one, please ensure your direct email address is on your booking form. If possible, avoid using generic email addresses such as info@... etc. Please let us know if you have not heard from us within a reasonable amount of time of submitting your form, as you can only attend a course once you have received written confirmation. We will send joining instructions at least 14 days before each event, which will include venue details. We cannot accept responsibility for non-arrival of this information. If you have not heard from us 7 days before the event, you should contact us on 0114 253 6623. Health and Safety and the Safe Learner Most of VAS's training takes place at The Circle, a purpose-built training venue offering full accessibility. VAS will carry out a risk assessment if training takes place at a different venue to ensure that, as far as possible, all learners and trainers are safe and all unnecessary risks are controlled. Learners are required to respect the arrangements that VAS staff and trainers make to minimise risk and comply with Health and Safety guidelines. Travelling to and using our venues You will receive directions to venues but, due to the ongoing building work in and around Sheffield city centre, we strongly recommend that you plan your route well in advance as car parking is limited and road access may vary. The most efficient way to travel to The Circle is by Supertram where you can make use of the Park and Ride facility. Park and Ride sites are located at Meadowhall, Valley Centertainment, Halfway, Parkway Central, Malin Bridge and Middlewood. The Circle is less than a 5 minute walk from the nearby tram stops on West Street. All the venues we use are accessible to disabled people. Thatisbasedonyourorganisationalpracticesandpolicies · Matchedtoyourstaffteam, volunteersormanagementcommittee A day's training at your own premises for a voluntary organisation costs around £600 - this could represent a significant saving in training costs. Courses we are often asked for include; · SafeWorkingandHandlingConflict-forfrontlineworkers · MotivationalInterviewing-forkeyworkers · PrinciplesofGoodGovernance-fortrustees · SupportingandDevelopingVolunteers-forprojectworkers · Equality,DiversityandInclusiveness-forserviceusers,volunteersandstaffmembers Feedback from organisations: Skills for Working with Groups: This three-day course has optional accreditation through Open College Network (OCN). One course was tailored for an organisation that runs support groups for people making lifestyle changes. The course leader is a specialist in working with therapeutic groups and demonstrates the techniques and principles of effective groupwork by embedding them in the course. Participants were immediately able to implement their new learning into their groupwork, allowing them to check out developments and ideas with the facilitator during the course. This is what participants had to say after the course: "This is the best course I have been on. It was interesting, fair, dynamic. The facilitator kept me interested and motivated. He moved at a good pace and was extremely professional yet approachable". "Great facilitator!! Practiced what he preached (though he didn't preach)". Confidence and Personal Development for Parents of Multiple Heritage Children This course was designed by VAS to be delivered over six half-days for a group of parents, following an evening meeting with the group. Here's what the Project Worker had to say after the course: "All the parents that attended the training gave extremely positive feedback. They said all the topics were relevant to their situation and circumstances and there was the right balance between listening time, role play sessions, and they all learnt a great deal and enjoyed the sessions at the same time". One participant said she `'looked forward to the training all week''. "The group really bonded ... they drafted a letter to the trainer to express their thanks for the course content and they also praised her for her style of training and thanked her for being a really nice person". Consultancy and Facilitated Events: VAS can help you to identify and commission consultants and facilitators, external supervisors and interim managers, using our database of experts. Just contact us for advice and we will help you to identify the right person for you and your organisation. If you are interested in arranging some tailored training on a topic of your choice, please contact Christine Healey at E: c.healey@vas.org.uk or T: 0114 2536627. 11 Accredited Courses and National Qualifications All the courses in this section of the programme lead to nationally recognised qualifications or accreditation and require participants to successfully complete all sections of the course and submit the required tasks. We advise you to discuss this commitment with your employer and we also offer the opportunity for a one-to-one discussion about whether each course will meet your training needs. Call Christine Healey on 0114 253 6627 or email c.healey@vas.org.uk The accredited courses are individually priced. The prices shown represent the full costs of delivery. We are currently bidding for funding that could reduce these costs by as much as 60%. Please express an interest by emailing training@vas.org.uk and we will be able to inform you of the exact cost well before the course starts. If we are unable to secure funding, we will endeavour to reduce these costs by restructuring and reducing individual learner support. All accredited courses are delivered through a `blended' combination of face-to-face and online methods. The interactive online component of the course can be fitted around the working day of the participants it is available whenever you are. Support is available from both the online tutor and other learners at almost any time. Here's what previous learners said about their experience of blended learning: "I really liked this approach to learning, it felt bite sized and manageable and very possible to stay on track." "I really enjoyed the course and got loads from it!" "I can honestly say I learnt from all areas of the course." "The structure of the course was excellent. Just about right with regards to teaching days and online work. I especially liked that work did not have to be submitted in hard copy." 12 NEW NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance This course commences in January 2010 and finishes in June 2010 This course is designed to meet the needs of people whose work includes a large component of information, advice and guidance: for example, people who carry a caseload of service users and support them to overcome barriers or people who work in infrastructure organisations and support groups. Achievement of this course should also support the Matrix Quality standard. How this course works: This course enables you to achieve a full Level 3 qualification (240 hours) through a combination of 8 days face-to-face learning plus distance learning, individually supported by online tutors and the Learning Community. Participants gather together on these face to face sessions to explore the mandatory topics. Further study in your choice of optional topics is undertaken online, supported by a specialist tutor. No special computer equipment is needed, though participants must have reliable access to the Internet and an email address. The Certificate is evidence-based, which means participants must demonstrate that they have understood the content of the course and are able to apply it to their roles at work. This evidence is gathered through a combination of assignments and online discussions, which are completed and assessed through the Internet site. If required, each unit of the course can be accredited separately and built on later to achieve the full Certificate so partial achievement is recognised. Full cost per learner: £1058.50 including £204.00 for NOCN registration, assessment and verification. 13 ILM Level 5 Award in Management This course will be delivered through online tutor support and resources, in small groups, with 1 half-day induction and 5 half-day face-to-face tutorials per group (dates will be negotiated with each group). We believe that this approach will enable learners to make the best use of their time away from work. It is suitable for managers who have significant experience in managing both people and budgets and who want to improve their understanding of management theory and practice. The course focuses on the application of theory in the workplace.
